There are very many health websites on the internet. Not all of them are recommended. Here we provide links to the most helpful and useful.
NHS Direct
The NHS's own site and main portal for health advice. A symptom checker is available. Links in with the service staffed by trained professionals that is available 24 hours a day by telephone. Has an encyclopedia on a large number of health topics. Major health news and information on scares is posted on the main pages of this site. NHS Choices
The NHS main site, where you can find and choose NHS services such as hospitals in your area. Here you will be able to see where your nearest dentist is, as well as find advice on a huge range of medical conditions and medications. You can also sign up for their health newsletter, packed with health tips for you and your family. NHS Choices looks at the stories behind the headlines of recent health news. As well as advice on illness, there is an entire section on promoting and keeping good health with articles on smoking, weight, exercise, alcohol and diet. Patient UK
An extensive site providing comprehensive health information on a huge range of subjects. Downloadable patient information leaflets are available as are links to support groups. Visit Patient UK (link opens in a new window).
PatientPlus
PatientPlus is essentially an online medical textbook, and is an extension to Patient UK, covering a wide range of medical subjects in more detail. The articles are written for doctors and other healthcare professionals. However, some people find that they add depth to the 'plain English' articles found in the patient focused sections of this website which are specifically written for non medical people. DermIS.Net
DermIS.Net is a collaboration between two clinical departments in two German universities and is the largest dermatology information service available on the internet. It offers elaborate image atlases complete with diagnoses and differential diagnoses, case reports and additional information on almost all skin diseases. Dermnet

Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust

NICE
The National Institute for Clinical Excellence is an independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health and preventing and treating ill health. NICE makes recommendations to the NHS on new and existing medicines, treatments and procedures and on treating and caring for people with specific diseases and conditions. It is involved in overseeing the development of indicators used to stimulate the provision of good quality clinical care and for helping to improve people's health in general practice. Fit for Travel
This is a public access website provided by the NHS (Scotland). It gives travel health information for people travelling abroad from the UK. Remember that you should always discuss your particular needs with us before you travel. Our travel questionnaire is available to download. BUPA
This is a comprehensive site of health information on a large variety of topics. Bupa's health information contains more than 600 pages of free and trustworthy content for consumers on conditions, treatments and how to live a healthy life. In co-operation with EMIS, our computer system supplier, we are providing a service that enables you access to your healthcare online.
